Missing soldiers in the Netherlands 1940-1945

In some places bodies washed up, but were re-buried on other locations, after the war:

 

Beuningen: A soldier of the Green Howards, 25-09-1944. Probably buried in 1945 on Groesbeek War Cemetery.

Arnhem-Oosterbeek War Cemetery

 

 The city of Arnhem is in the east of the Netherlands, the village of Oosterbeek is 7kms west of Arnhem.

From the A12 motorway DEN HAAG to ARNHEM take exit 25 (Afrit 25) N224 OOSTERBEEK / WOLFHEZE. Follow the signs for OOSTERBEEK. After approx 3.5kms turn right (CWGC Sign) onto the DREYENSEWEG. Continue for approx 2kms and turn left (CWGC sign) onto VAN LIMBURG STIRUMWEG. After approx 1km the cemetery can be found on the left side. Bergen op Zoom War Cemetery

 

 

Bergen-op-Zoom is a town in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant, 40 kilometres north-west of Antwerp (Belgium). Bergen-op-Zoom War Cemetery and Bergen-op-Zoom Canadian War Cemetery are almost next to one another, 3 kilometres east of the town centre, on a road named Ruytershoveweg, which runs parallel with the A58 Bergen-op-Zoom to Roosendaal motorway.

 

The cemeteries can be reached from the motorway by taking the Bergen-op-Zoom exit, which leads on to Rooseveltlaan. At the first crossroads the cemeteries are signposted to the right. There is a further signposted right turn after 1 kilometre, and the cemeteries are 2 kilometres along this road on the left-hand side.

Brunssum War Cemetery

 

The town of Brunssum is in the south east corner of the Netherlands close to the German border, approx 30kms north east of Maastricht.

 

From the A2 motorway Eindhoven to Maastricht take exit 48 (afrit 48) URMOND / GELEEN / STEIN.

Follow direction N294 SITTARD for approx 4kms.

Turn right onto N276 direction BRUNSSUM and continue for approx 10kms.

Turn left onto KENNEDYLAAN direction BRUNSSUM CENTRUM (signposted Oorlogskerkhof) and continue for approx 1.3kms.

Turn right at roundabout direction CENTRUM onto MERKELBEEKERSTRAAT and after approx 200m turn left onto HEUFSTRAAT (CWGC sign)

The cemetery is approx 100m on the left.

Colijnsplaat General Cemetery, Zeeland

 

Colijnsplaat is a small town in the north eastern part of the island of Noord-Beveland. It is part of the Noord-Beveland municipality located in the province of Zeeland, in the south-western Netherlands. It is approx 13kms north of Goes.

The 2 graves are located centrally on the right side of the cemetery next to boundary hedge, soldier from the United Kingdom and an airman from Australia. The soldier is not identified

Driewegen Protestant Cemetery, Zeeland

 

 

 

Driewegen is a small village. It is part of the Terneuzen municipality located in the province of Zeeland, in the south-western Netherlands. It is approx 17kms west of Terneuzen.

The cemetery is in the centre of the village, behind the Protestant church and the 2 graves are at the end of the main path on the left.

Geldermalsen General Cemetery

 

 Geldermalsen is 45 kilometres west of Nijmegen and 11 kilometres west of Tiel. The cemetery lies on the eastern outskirts of the village, south of the road to Tiel. The war graves are in the south-eastern corner of the cemetery.


Holten Canadian War Cemetery

 

 

The village of Holten is in the north east of the Netherlands approx 20 kms east of the town of Deventer.

 

From the A1 motorway AMSTERDAM to HENGELO take exit 27 (Afrit 27) MARKELO / HOLTEN-OOST / RIJSEN-WEST / HELLENDOORN.

Follow the signs for N350 HOLTEN on the MARKELOSEWEG.

Continue through the village on the ORANJESTRAAT which becomes the DORPSTRAAT.

Follow the signs for HOLTERBERG.

Pass under the railway bridge and then turn right at the roundabout (CWGC sign)

After approx 100m turn right (CWGC sign) onto MOLENBELTERWEG.

Continue for approx 2,5kms road name changes to HOLTERBERGWEG.

Turn right (CWGC sign) onto WULLENBERGWEG.

After approx 600m turn left onto EEKHOORNWEG. The cemetery is approx 200m on the left.

Jonkerbos War Cemetery, Nijmegen

 

 The city of Nijmegen lies to the south of Arnhem in the east of the Netherlands.

 

From the A50 motorway ARNHEM to NIJMEGEN follow the signs for A73 KÖLN / NIJMEGEN / VENLO.

Follow the signs for NIJMEGEN CENTRUM.

Continue along NEERBOSSCHEWEG following the signs for MALDEN / MOOK for approx 2.5kms.

Turn left (CWGC sign) following the signs for DE GOFFERT, onto BURGEMEESTER DALESLAAN.

The cemetery is approx 200m on the right

Kamperland General Cemetery, Zeeland

 

 

Kamperland is a small village in the western part of the island of Noord-Beveland. It is part of the Noord-Beveland municipality located in the province of Zeeland, in the south-western Netherlands. It is approx 19kms north east of Middelburg.

1 Commonwealth burial of the 1914-1918 war is located on the right of the central path and 5 of the 1939-1945 war on the left of the central path

Mierlo War Cemetery

 

The village of Mierlo lies in the south of the Netherlands approx 12kms to the east of Eindhoven.

 

From the A67 Eindhoven to Venlo motorway take exit 34 (Afrit 34) GELDROP / HEEZE and follow the signs for GELDROP.

Continue for approx 1.3kms along BOGARDEIND and turn right, direction MIERLO onto LAAN DER VIER HEEMSKINDEREN and continue for approx 500m. Turn left at the roundabout and continue for approx 900m. The road name changes from DOMMELDALSEWEG to JOHAN PEIJNENBURGWEG.

Turn right onto MIERLOSEWEG and continue in the direction of MIERLO for approx 2.3kms. The road name changes to GELDROPSEWEG.

The cemetery is signposted and can be found on the left.

Mook War Cemetery

 

 

The village of Mook is in the east of the Netherlands, approx 11kms south east of the city of Nijmegen.

 From the A73 motorway NIJMEGEN to VENLO take exit 3 (Afrit 3) MALDEN / GROESBEEK / MOOK / HEUMEN / OVERASSELT.

Follow signs for N271 MOOK.

Continue through the village of MOLENHOEK and in the village of MOOK turn left at the roundabout (CWGC sign for MOOK WAR CEMETERY) onto the GROESBEEKSEWEG.

The cemetery is approx 400m on the left.

Overloon War Cemetery

 

The town of Overloon lies in the south of the Netherlands approx 40kms to the south of Nijmegen.

 From the A73 Nijmegen to Venlo motorway take exit 7 (Afrit 7) VIERLINGSBEEK / OVERLOON and follow the direction OVERLOON.

Continue for approx 2kms along the VIERLINGSBEEKSEWEG and on entering the village of Overloon turn left (CWGC sign).

The cemetery can be found after approx 100m on the left.

Reusel Roman Catholic Cemetery, Noord Brabant

 

 

Reusel is a village 26 kilometres south-west of Eindhoven and 16 kilometres north-east of the Belgian town of Turnhout.

 

The cemetery is north of the church, which stands on the north side of the Eindhoven to Turnhout road. The war graves are in the north-east part of the cemetery.


Sint Oedenrode Roman Catholic Cemetery

 

 St. Oedenrode is a village 16 kilometres north of Eindhoven and about 7.5 kilometres east of the main road from Eindhoven to s'Hertogenbosch.

 This cemetery is in the precincts of the Roman Catholic Church, which faces the market square. The graves are in a prominent position, surrounding a high mound on the eastern side of the Cemetery.

Sittard War Cemetery

 

 

The town of Sittard is in the south east corner of the Netherlands close to the German border, and approx 25kms north east of Maastricht.

 From the A2 motorway Eindhoven to Maastricht take exit 48 (afrit 48) URMOND / GELEEN / STEIN.

Follow the direction N294 SITTARD for approx 4kms.

Turn right onto N276 direction SITTARD-ZUID and continue for approx 1km. Turn right SITTARD ZUID / GELEEN and follow the signs for SITTARD ZUID.

Turn left onto RIJKSWEG ZUID and continue for approx 1km, passing under the railway bridge.

Turn right (CWGC sign) onto GEUWEG and after 50m turn right (CWGC sign) onto KROMSTRAAT.

The cemetery can be found after approx 400m on the right

Steenderen General Cemetery

 

 Steenderen is a village about 10 kilometres south of Zutphen and 4 kilometres east of the main Arnhem-Zutphen road. The cemetery is located in Kerkhofweg, a small road opposite the church. The Commonwealth war graves can be found to the left of the main path.


Tolkamer General Cemetery

 

 

The village of Tolkamer in the commune of Herwenen-Aerdt is 20 kilometres south-east of Arnhem on the north bank of the Rhine.

 

The cemetery is about 1 kilometre west of the village on the bank of a canal, and is a small enclosure used for bodies washed ashore in the vicinity.


Uden War Cemetery

 

 The town of Uden lies in the south east of the Netherlands, approx 33kms to the north east of Eindhoven.

From the A50 Eindhoven to Nijmegen motorway take exit 14 (Afrit 14) ZEELAND / UDEN and follow the signs for UDEN.

Continue for approx 500m and turn right (CWGC sign) onto BITSWIJK, continue for approx 1km during which the road name changes to MONSEIGNEUR BOSSTRAAT.

Turn left (CWGC Signposted) onto PIUSPLEIN and then turn right (CWGC sign) after approx 100m onto BURGEMEESTER BUSKENSSTRAAT.

The cemetery can be found approx 100m on the right.

Valkenswaard War Cemetery

 

 The town of Valkenswaard lies in the south of the Netherlands, approx 10kms south of Eindhoven and close to the Belgian border.

 From the A2 Eindhoven to Maastricht motorway take exit 33 (Afrit 33) N69 VALKENSWAARD and follow the direction VALKENSWAARD.

Continue for approx 11kms, passing through the town of Valkenswaard and following signs for N69 HASSELT.

The cemetery can be found on the right hand side and is signposted.

Veghel, Roman Catholic Cemetery

 

 Veghel is a village situated about half-way between Eindhoven and 'S-Hertogenbosch. The churchyard is about 200 metres from the market place, which is in the centre of the village. The plot of 3 headstones is located in the north-east corner of the churchyard and can be found by following the small green direction boards (WAR GRAVES -OORLOGSGRAVEN). Go right to the end of the main central path and then turn right. The graves are 30m away


Venray War Cemetery

 

The town of Venray lies in the south of the Netherlands approx 40kms to the east of Eindhoven.

 

From the A73 Nijmegen to Venlo motorway take exit 9 (Afrit 9) N270 VENRAY / HELMOND and follow the signs for HELMOND.

Continue for approx 3kms to a roundabout and turn right (CWGC sign) onto the LANGSTRAAT.

Continue for approx 800m and turn left (CWGC sign) onto the WESTSINGEL. Continue for approx 1km and turn left (CWGC sign) onto the HOENDERSTRAAT.

The cemetery can be found after approx 700m on the right.

Winterswijk Cemetery

 

 Winterswijk, in the province of Gelderland, is 6 kilometres from the Dutch-German border, on the secondary road to Osnabruck and Munster. It lies 68 kilometres east of Arnhem and 11 kilometres south-east of Groenlo. The cemetery is located in Waliensestraat on the way to Meddo.
