The monument in the Catharinakerk in Doetinchem was erected in memory of all fellow citizens who were killed when the inner city was bombed by the Allies on 19, 21 and 23 March 1945.
This involved more than 140 victims and many historic buildings were destroyed irreparably. Only a ruin of the ancient Sint Catharinakerk remained. In 1948 they started the reconstruction that lasted until 1963. Gaanderen was also affected during that period and as a result parts of the Kerkstraat, the Rijksweg and the Neerlandia factory were destroyed.
